Abstract

The cyberpunk genre portrays a dystopian future where humans – in the light of social inequality and everyday violence – enhance their bodies to cope with a hazardous socio-economic environment. The series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” (2022) by Hiroyuki Imaishi combines this genre with the culturally well-known idea of space as a refuge. By displaying the moon as place of desire for the main character, it touches on topics like the romanticization of space and mastery and salvation through technology. Our goal is to examine the almost messianic role of technology at the intersection of the cultural reception of crewed space exploration and cyberpunk.
